THE CORSET

Speculative design, 2023

What happens when laws and regulations fail to protect women, trans, and non-binary bodies? What does it look like when prey are forced to fight back?

In a world where power and force determines the ownership of bodies, The Corset redefines the definition of femininity. The Corset is designed to be worn by women, non-binary, transgender people who are perceived as “prey” to deflect male violators. The suit is layered with straps, locks, and buckles that intertwine with both fabric layers and biomimicry resin to purposefully create a puzzle of complexity.

Each user can arrange these layers differently, making each suit unique and harder to violate. Originally sold by companies who saw a new market in the fears of prey, radicalists have decided to transform the outfit into something else.

Over time, The Corset is worn in two ways: hidden under everyday clothes like traditional corsets to act as a layer of security or out for everyone to see to act as a warning. The biomimicry resin is modeled after the bones of puffer fish who are preyed upon in the wild and famously known for its poisonous Tetrodotoxin. The pattern allows the straps and buckles to weave in and out all through the body. In order to transform The Corset into a suit of warning, each center triangle has microscopic spikes that can be coated with poison. Any male violator who touches the spikes will meet the demise of a predator who attacks poisonous prey.

This determines how far those who are preyed upon are willing to suffer in order to protect themselves from those who violate consent. How much will we risk in order to take back ownership of our bodies?
