POSTHUMANISM

Speculative World Building, 2023

Speculative world building begins with identifying a present weakness within our society and speculate what the future would look like if the weakness were made to the extreme. By adding metrics and norms to the world, a speculative future is created. My research with abortion laws for Capstone prompted me to continue to explore the ownership of bodies in a speculative light. The increase in air, ground, and food pollution actually cause affects of infertility in sperm and ovaries. Studies show couples living in polluted cities claim to have not gotten pregnant after a year of trying. What if we lived in a world where the fight for abortion rights was obsolete due to infertility caused by pollution and climate change?

All concepts were rendered in Keyshot.

In this speculative world concept, biolgical birth is no longer possible. As the population began to drop, companies started to sell artifical babies to capitalize on the new market of motherhood. People began to choose which company that would carry their bloodline and family. The major companies began to split into islands due to rising sea levels and their customers who are devoted to raising their families based on the company. ORIGENE prides their designs of babies as authentically human which garners high end prices. KIDWAY embraces the technological a dvancements within their baby models. Their customers can program their babies to not poop, cry, or scream to ease the experience of motherhood. Transportation is by train above sealevel after each citizen gives their name, company origin, and serial number identification. Hospitals now work with the corporation to provide birthday upgrades to the baby to mimic the effects of a growing body. In order to purchase a baby, you need credits that measure income, marriage status, career, criminal record, and household.
